Spain was settled by Iberians, Basques and Celts, overrun by the
Carthaginians and conquered by Rome in 200 BC. In the 5th
Century, the Visagoths took power, adopted Christianity and in
711 AD lost control to an Islamic invasion from Africa. In 1469,
the Kingdoms of Aragon and Castile were united by the marriage of
Ferdinand II and Isabella I and by 1492 the last Moors were
driven from Spain. When Columbus discovered the America in
1492, Spain acquired a great colonial empire. Spain also
controlled the Netherlands, parts of Italy and Germany. During
the 19th Century, most of the American colonies were lost to
independence or the United States. Primo de Rivera became
dictator in 1923, but in 1930, King Alfonso XIII revoked the
dictatorship. In 1931, the King was forced to abdicate and leave
the country. A republic was created, with an initial
conservative political coalition, followed from 1936 to 1939 by
the Popular Front of socialists, communists, republicans and
anarchists. The army, under command of Francisco Franco revolted
against the government in 1936. A three year civil war followed,
in which over one million people were killed. Franco was
supported from Italy and Germany, while the republic was
supported by France, Mexico and the U.S.S.R. On March 28, 1939
the war ended and Franco was made leader of Spain. Spain
remained neutral during World War II, but because of its
associations with Germany was not allowed into the United Nations
until 1955. In July 1969, Franco named Prince Juan Carlos as the
future King and Chief of State. On November 20, 1975, on the
death of Franco, Juan Carlos was sworn in as King. He presided
over the dissolution of the Franco government and in 1977 free
elections were held. The states of Catalonian and the Basque
were granted autonomy in 1980, but Basque extremist continue to
fight for independence. Spain is continuing to seek the return
of Gibraltar from the British. @
